FAMILY OF 23 MONTH OLD THANK OFFICER FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, FLORIDA – The parents of a toddler who called for medical treatment came by the Police Department Friday to thank the Officer who helped him. 23 month old Matthew Barton was with his family at WalMart on Monday when he began convulsing. The family asked for help and WalMart employees immediately called 911. Officer John Avery received the call and responded. Prior to arrival, the boy lost consciousness. Officer Avery, who is trained in CPR, responded and checked Matthew’s vitals, while awaiting EMS to arrive. Matthew was breathing but not alert. Officer Avery continued to monitor Matthew and was ready to perform CPR if needed. EMS arrived and transported the toddler to Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment. The Barton family wanted to express their gratitude to Officer Avery and let Matthew meet him. “This is the reason I became a Police Officer, said Officer Avery. I want to help people and make a difference.”

Officers also happened to be in the right place at the right time this past Sunday. Officer J.T. Waters had just finished eating at Waffle House when an elderly man passed out. Officer Waters checked his vitals and found no pulse and began CPR. EMS was notified and arrived to take over CPR. The man eventually started breathing on his own and was transported to Healthmark Regional Medical Center for treatment. “I am proud of my Officers for using their training to help save lives. This is what we do, said Chief Mark Weeks. This job is not just about enforcing the law, but helping people in need.”
