Ned L. Melvin

Ned L. Melvin, age 78, of Freeport, Fla., passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at his residence. He was born Sept. 12, 1938 to James S. and Bessie Commander Melvin. His early school years were in his hometown of Freeport, he then attended school in DeFuniak and graduated in Tampa, Fla. After 40 years of employment with Louis Dreyfus Energy in Tampa, Ned retired from the position as terminal manager. In 1970, he was ordained as a deacon, serving the Baptist position faithfully throughout the years. He enjoyed spending his spare time outdoors hunting and fishing or indoors watching NASCAR and football. Ned is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Carolyn Holman Melvin; one daughter, Lori Long and husband Scott of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Michael Melvin and wife Katie of Tampa, Fla., and Forrest Melvin and wife Veronica of Freeport, Fla.; one brother, Grady Melvin and wife Brenda of Freeport, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Freeport, 430 Kylea Laird Drive, Freeport, FL 32439 beginning at 2 p.m. A time of visitation was held one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice. Arrangements and services were under the direction of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home.
