Mrs. Joyce Marlene Merchant, 60, passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017.
She was born Aug. 16, 1956 in Pensacola, Fla. to Jesse and Joyce Faye Paulk McGowan.
Mrs. Merchant was a lifelong resident of Ponce de Leon. She was Baptist by faith and a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
She graduated from Ponce de Leon High School in 1974, and attended Riley Business College in Dothan, Ala.
She was a devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a very talented softball player, having received the most Valuable Player Award in the Southeast Region Women’s Slow Pitch league in 1989.
Mrs. Merchant was preceded in death by her father, Jesse McGowan; one nephew, James Cory McGowan, and her maternal grandmother, Minnie Lou Paulk.
Mrs. Merchant is survived by her mother, Joyce Faye McGowan of Ponce de Leon, Fla; one son, Erik Reginald Merchant of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Rev. Larry McGowan and wife, Pam of Ponce de Leon; one sister, Sharon Gavin of Panama City, Fla., and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Revs. Larry McGowan and Chris Carroll officiating.
Pallbearers were Shane McGowan, Josh McGowan, Dale Powell, Devin Locke, Jesse Gavin, Craig Gavin and Brandy Raybon.
Flowers are being accepted.
Burial followed in the New Ponce de Leon Cemetery.
