The South Walton girls basketball program garnered its tenth win of the 2017-2018
season with an impressive 61-50 victory over Class 8A Niceville in Santa Rosa Beach this past
Thursday.
A split crowd in a half-filled Hawks Nest saw the home team never trail in the contest,
and witnessed Allee Coble lead all scorers with 19 points while Gracie Lowry added 16 and
Gracie Ricci pitched in 10.
Coach Kevin Craig’s squad used a brisk motion offense and steals from five different
Hawks to take a 17-9 lead in the opening quarter. The Walton County club maintained the pace
in the next two quarters, taking a 45-30 lead into the final period.
An unfocused defensive effort in the fourth quarter by the Green and White, along with
some poor shooting, drew the obvious ire of Craig, and helped the visitors from Okaloosa
County pull the contest to within a 55-46 margin with 2:13 remaining in the contest.
However, a bucket by Lowry and three free throws by Shannon Cole helped give the
game its final score, and left the longtime coach applauding his team’s effort.
The 10-2 Hawks (3-0 in district) will then host seven consecutive home games starting
with Freeport on Friday night and a highly anticipated district contest against intra-county foe
Walton on Jan. 16.
