Qualifying for Paxton City Council seats to begin in June [PREMIUM CONTENT]

THE PAXTON CITY COUNCIL held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 17, at Paxton Town Hall.

The Paxton City Council met on Tuesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bobby Kemp. Present was Mayor Hayward Thomas; Council members Kemp, Jenice Armstrong, and Ann Sexton; City Clerk Suzan Imfeld, and Attorney Clayton Adkinson. Absent were Council members Travis McMillan and Tommy Mathis. The monthly minutes and monthly bills were reviewed and approved.
The first agenda item discussed was an interim loan approval. Attorney Adkinson stated that a motion was needed to approve Co Bank for the loan on the Water Grant for $454,000.00. The motion carried to approve this item. The second item on the agenda was Resolution 18-02. Resolution 18-02 authorizes the Revenue Bonds for for $454,000.00 for Rural Development. Adkinson additionally recommended Resolution 18-03, authorizing the ayor and city clerk to execute documents and all other documents. The motion carried to approve both Resolution 18-02 and Resolution 18-03.
Moving into Other Business were concerns addressing the minimum wage that was
paid recently to an individual to oversee the spring cleanup for the city. Council member Sexton expressed concern about the pay as previously the city had always paid $10.00 per hour. Sexton asked why the rate had changed and stated that the job entails a lot of aspects, particularly the task of interacting with difficult people that are prone to negative behavior. It was Mayor Thomas who made the change in the rates. A motion by Sexton and Armstrong carried to back pay the individual the difference between $8.25 per hour and $10.00 per hour.
For Department Reports Sexton inquired about the school having permission to use the ballfields for “Water Day” on May 17-18. The motion carried granting permission for Paxton school to use the ballfields for said purpose on May 17-18.
Qualifying for three council seats will begin June 18-21, 2018 at 12 p.m. All candidates must live inside the Paxton City Limits for one year and be a Walton County registered voter. The next Paxton City Council regular meeting will be held on May 15, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at Paxton Town Hall.
