South Walton sweeps Bozeman

Dec 6th, 2012 | 0

The South Walton Seahawks got 19 points from Wyatt Kemper as they rallied from a first half deficit to earn their first district win of the season with a 62-52 decision over the Bozeman Bucks.

South Walton trailed 16-14 after one quarter of play as the Bay County squad nailed three shots from beyond the arc to get off to a fast start as three different players contributed three-pointers.

Bozeman’s Herbie Harrell scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half as the visiting team took a 33-31 lead into intermission as they forced 16 turnovers from South Walton.

Kemper scored all 10 of his first half points in the first quarter to help coach John Davies squad pound the boards for key inside baskets. Bishop Waldrop took over in the second quarter as he scored eight of his 15 points in that frame.

The Seahawks turned the corner in the third quarter as the offense got going as sophomore Paxton Dixon scored a pair of baskets that pushed South Walton out in front 46-41 by the end of the quarter. Dixon would go on to finish the game with 11 points.

Bozeman hit only 8-of-31 shots in the second half of play and had 14 of their 27 turnovers over the final 16 minutes as they could not keep pace with the Seahawks’ depth and speed of the game.

Kemper added six more points in the fourth quarter and Darien Moore totaled 10 points after halftime to help South Walton improve to 4-0 overall on the year.

South Walton’s girls had no trouble with Bozeman’s squad as they squished the Bucks 82-7. Tayler Menard put up 16 points with Casey Perot contributing 14 and her sister, Mackenzie Perot adding 10. Kati Trejo also added 10 points as the Seahawks won their first game after a 10-day break to improve to 4-3 overall.

Team Notes: South Walton and Bozeman have not split 14 meetings in the series history. The Seahawks boys team is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2008-09. John Davies is in his sixth season as head coach and has a record of 61-79 at the school. The South Walton girls are 14-0 against Bozeman in the history of the series. The Seahawks girls set the school record for winning margin with a 94-4 win over Bozeman on Dec. 7, 2010. South Walton will travel to Bozeman on Jan. 15.
