NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author Stephen Coonts gave the keynote address at the Emerald Coast Writers’ Conference April 3. Coonts, author of the mega-hit debut novel-turned film, “Flight of the Intruder,” has penned almost 30 naval aviation-themed novels. On writing the first novel (which received 34 rejections) he said, “I had plenty of time and no money, so [I sat down to] write this flying story I’d always wanted to write. You can’t be a writer unless you’re a reader. You have to love stories; they have to speak to you. You can’t be a musician unless you like music. You can’t be an artist unless you like design. Whenever people say to me, ‘I want to be a writer,’ my first question is ‘Well, what do you read?’” In a final note of encouragement, he declared, “If Stephen Coonts can become a professional writer, anybody can that sits down, puts their butt in a chair, and works at it.”
