Hunter Infinger caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cody Adams with 53 seconds left in the game to give the South Walton Seahawks a 37-34 victory over the Holmes County Bluedevils in a key District 1, Class 2B contest.
The fourth quarter saw each team’s offense go wild as five touchdowns were scored over the final 12 minutes as Holmes County rallied from a 24-7 deficit to take a 34-31 on Bluedevils senior Josh French’s 25-yard touchdown reception from Jomar Concepcion with 2:18 left in the game. The scoring strike completed what seemed to be an improbable comeback by the 1-8 Bluedevils as they generated several big plays in the fourth quarter to rally from a 31-15 deficit with just over 11 minutes to play.
Holmes County scored three touchdowns in just over eight minutes of play in the fourth quarter as Concepcion ran 74 yards for a touchdown, then tossed two touchdown passes to rally his team.
South Walton was not to be outdone. The Seahawks engineered a 6-play, 71-yard drive that needed only 75 seconds to retake the lead as quarterbacks Cody Adams and Dennis Smith led South Walton down the field for the winning score. Adams and Smith combined to pass for 121 yards with Adams tossing both scoring passes on the night.
Seahawk running back Bryant Adams carried the load for South Walton as he pounded out 156 yards and overcame a costly fumble to provide ground support on the final drive of the night.
The Seahawks seemed to have control of the game as they scored on five of their first six possessions, but Holmes County found several quick scoring drives as they hit upon big plays from scrimmage as well as 198 return yards to earn field position in South Walton territory.
The win was a milestone for South Walton as they earned their first winning season in school history by improving to 6-2. The victory, coupled with Baker’s 17-14 overtime loss to Vernon, also leaves the door open to a possible district championship for the club and a playoff berth. The Seahawks will travel to Northview(2-6) on Friday to face the Chiefs in a game that South Walton must win to stay alive for the district title. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
