WALTON GOLF TEAM CAPTURES FOURTH DISTRICT CROWN
By PATRICK CASEY
Walton junior Paul McClure shot a 72 to help lead the Walton Braves to their fourth consecutive district crown as the Braves won the District 2 event that was held at Bay Point Golf Club in Panama City.
McClure took home Low Medalist honors at the district tournament for the second time in the last three years while teammate Heath Morgan finished third by shooting a 79. Devin Partridge finished in fourth place with an 80 while Clay Cawthon was sixth with an 83.
Though South Walton did not qualify as a team, the Seahawks will be represented by Billy Davis, Shawn Howard and Dylan Smith at Tiger Point as individual qualifiers. Davis carded an 81, which was good enough for 5th place.
Panama City Arnold’s Tyler Chavira finished second to McClure with a 76 as Arnold and Holmes County finished second and third as teams to qualify for Tuesday’s regional.
Panama City Arnold and South Walton qualified both their girls teams for the next round as they were the only two schools to field team entries at the District 2 tournament.
On the girls side, Freeport’s Joslyn King qualified as an individual player for the regional by shooting a 111 with Walton’s lone golfer Aisha Scott qualifying with a 149.
Pensacola Catholic, Gulf Breeze and Rocky Bayou will represent District 1 at Tiger Point with Wakulla, Tallahassee Maclay and North Florida University High making the trip from District 3.
Pensacola Catholic will be the favorite to win the regional with Walton, Wakulla and Tallahassee Maclay likely to battle for the final state berth from Region I. The Braves have finished second in both 2006 and 2007 to advance to the state tournament.
The top two teams of the nine boys squads competing will advance to the state tournament in North Lakeland at The Golf Club at Bridgewater on October 28-29.
The top two girls teams from Region I will join 14 other squads to play The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland on October 28-29.
The two lowest scoring individuals not on either of the two teams to advance to state will qualify to play for the individual state championship in Class A provided their score at the regional is within five strokes of the Low Medalist. This is a change from previous seasons and will likely result in less individual golfers qualifying for the state tournament.
