South Walton wins Homecoming 38-6

Oct 8th, 2008 | 0

By PATRICK CASEY

South Walton improved to 4-1 on the year with a 38-6 victory over the Cottondale Hornets for Homecoming behind a running attack that rolled up 253 yards on the night.
Bryant Adams ran for 122 yards and a touchdown while Cody Adams added scoring runs of five and 13 yards as the Seahawks rebounded from a district loss to the Baker Gators with a non-district victory over the Hornets.
South Walton’s David Bazylak got the Seahawks on the scoreboard in the first minute of the game after Cottondale fumbled the ball away on their first possession. Bazylak scampered in from 17 yards out to give the Seahawks a 7-0 lead.
The Seahawks increased the lead to 13-0 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter as Bryant Adams ran in from 17 yards out to put more points on the board.
Cottondale answered with their only points of the game as Jacob Herring dashed 10 yards for a touchdown on the Hornets’ next possession to cut the lead to 13-6.
The rest of the night, South Walton dominated. The defense thwarted every possession of the Hornets in the second half as the Seahawks stopped the visiting squad on three fourth down conversion attempts.
Meanwhile, mistakes plagued the Hornets. Cottondale fumbled the ball away twice in the first half, muffed a punt snap that set up a 36-yard field goal by Bazylak in the fourth quarter, and quarterback Jesse Freeman was sacked three times by a Seahawk defense that lived in the Hornets backfield most of the night.
South Walton completed only three passes on the night, but did not have to throw the ball much as the running game was in full force.
South Walton (4-1) will travel to Vernon for a key district contest on Friday night. The game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff and is the Yellowjackets Homecoming game. Vernon has lost two in a row, but will be playing their first district game of the season, while South Walton faces a must-win situation after dropping their first district game to Baker 35-33.
