ALTON LEARNING CENTER HONORED; 2008-09 BUDGET SET

Sep 26th, 2008 | 0

By ASHLEY AMASON

The Sept. 16, 2008 school board meeting began with Superintendent Anderson presenting a certificate of achievement to director Jerry White and lead teacher Pam Hooks of the Walton Learning Center for receiving an exemplary rating in the Department of Education Quality Assurance Review.
Chief Financial Officer Jim McCall presented the 2008-2009 school year budget. Last year’s budget was $135,352,721. This year’s budget decreased to $116, 404,637. Chairman Barnhill stated, “let our budget reflect the declining economy.”
The board and McCall then collaborated to reduce the millage rate from 1.3010 mills to 1.233 mills, reducing the budget to $115,178,056, a decrease of $1,226,581.
Coordinator of Facilities Mark Gardner updated the board on current school projects, including the athletic fields of South Walton, the progress of the new Walton High School, and the upgrades to the gym and classrooms at Walton Middle School.
The motion carried to approve all personnel recommendations, including new hires Teresa Kay Tripp at Freeport Elementary School and Erin Capwell at Mossy Head Elementary.
The board unanimously approved the choice of People’s National Bank as the official bank of Mossy Head Elementary School. Board members cheerfully approved the colors and mascot choice of Mossy Head Elementary School. Principal Hinote proudly declared the students voted to elect a mustang as their mascot and chose red, black, and white as their official colors. So begins a new tradition with the mighty Mossy Head Mustangs.
