Staff Reports

A man who allegedly beat up his pregnant girlfriend faces serious felony charges related to the incident.  At around 8 a.m. on July 19, Walton County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at an apartment on Long Leaf Lane along the Bay/Walton county line in the Inlet Beach community.
Authorities say Marcos Garcia, 24, arrived at the residence and got into an argument which became physical with Chinae Mumford, who is reportedly six-weeks pregnant with Garcia’s child.  Mumford, 19, called for help, and her mother’s boyfriend came from the apartment below to assist.
Richard O’Brien, 41, tried to separate the two from fighting and in the process got into an altercation with Garcia. The fight escalated and wound up outside on the balcony. At one point, O’Brien reportedly stabbed Garcia in the shoulder, causing a large loss of blood. Several witnesses also received minor cuts during the melee.
Garcia was airlifted by helicopter to Baptist hospital in Pensacola where he was treated for a minor stab wound.  He was then booked into the Escambia County Jail on a warrant for Walton County. Garcia is being held without bond awaiting extradition on the charge of aggravated battery on a pregnant person, a second-degree felony. Mumford is reportedly in good condition, and is not expected to suffer any permanent injury from the attack.
O’Brien reportedly admitted to investigators that he did stab Garcia during the time both had been on the balcony.
O’Brien has been booked with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.  He is in custody at the Walton County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
