Donald Campbell has been hired as the Crestview girls basketball coach, replacing Keith White who has taken over the Crestview boys basketball team. The Bulldogs have struggled in the sport the last five seasons and compete in a district that has seen the Crestview squad garner little success of late.
There are 144 applicants for the men’s basketball coaching position at the University of West Florida. If all 144 were to get interviews, they might have a decision right before the season was to start.
The University of Alabama and San Jose State University football teams will meet for the first time on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will serve as the 2010 season opener for both programs. This will be the first contest played following a two-year renovation project to the south endzone of Bryant-Denny Stadium, which is expected to push the capacity over 100,000.
Penn State visits Tuscaloosa on September 11, 2010, and Alabama makes the trip to Happy Valley on September 10, 2011. Alabama’s non-conference schedule for 2010 is now set with the addition of San Jose State. The Crimson Tide will also play at Duke on September 18 and host Georgia State on November 20. The Crimson Tide earlier announced home-and-home series with Georgia Tech and Michigan State. Alabama hosts Georgia Tech on September 14, 2013, with the return to Atlanta set for September 13, 2014. The first match-up with the Spartans is scheduled for September 3, 2016, in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama will visit Spartan Stadium on September 2, 2017.
Longtime Athens and Georgia radio personality Scott Howard and former Bulldog All-America quarterback Eric Zeier have been named the permanent broadcast team for Georgia football according to an announcement by Georgia Director of Athletics Damon Evans. Howard and Zeier teamed up the last two years as the broadcast team on Georgia away games and took over for home games as well following the retirement of legendary Bulldog broadcaster Larry Munson early in the 2008 football season. The University of Georgia Athletic Association also announced that it has in principle reached a comprehensive eight-year agreement valued at $92.8 million with ISP Sports to serve as the exclusive multi-media rights marketer beginning July 1, 2009.
Auburn University has been awarded a grant of $26,400 from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to aid in the marketing of women’s basketball for the 2009-10 season. Auburn was one of 14 institutions and four conferences selected by the NCAA to receive a grant as part of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Grant Program, which is in its second year. The 2009-10 NCAA grant program dedicated approximately $750,000 nationally to increase awareness, exposure and increase attendance of women’s basketball. Auburn Athletics plans to utilize the funds this coming season to further expand a number of existing initiatives, while also adding new ones.
The Southeastern Conference has awarded sites for the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournaments (2013 and 2014) and SEC Women’s Basketball Tournaments (2010-2014), Commissioner Mike Slive announced on June 17. The Sommet Center in Nashville will host the 2011 and 2012 women’s tournament and the 2013 men’s tournament. The 2010, 2013 and 2014 women’s tournament will be held at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia, while the Georgia Dome in Atlanta will host the 2014 men’s tournament.
Georgia led the country with 11 players selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft, including two players taken in the first three rounds. Florida and Ole Miss were second nationally with 10 players drafted apiece.
The L.A. Dodgers signed FSU closer Jimmy Marshall last week. The senior relief pitcher for the Seminoles was chosen by the Dodgers in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball draft.
